nananea returns

Welcome to Game on Girl! Nananea returns in the first episode of season 2 of my original podcast. For this episode, we chat with Nananea about what she’s been up to in the five years since we originally had her on the show. She shares her experiences as a community manager for Robot Entertainment and her story about working her way into the game industry. We also talk in-depth about a pretty significant personal announcement she made a few months ago. She shares her experience with us and describes the joy of knowing she has a truly supportive community around her. I must admit, itRead More →

Hey, geeks. What’s happening? Today we’re going to talk about one of my favorite pastimes and how that’s changed — and how people’s perception of me has changed even when the pastime itself did not. Let’s talk video games. I’ve been playing video games since I was old enough to hold a controller. I distinctly remember playing on my father’s NES before school in kindergarten. I am not ashamed to admit that Star Trek was the first game I beat in its entirety. I later had different consoles and handheld gaming devices as the technology and I advanced. My wall of console games eventually morphedRead More →

A nerd, a wrestler, a lagomorph, and a heavy machine gunner get together for a game of poker… No, this isn’t the setup to a weird joke. This is the backdrop for one of the wackiest, weirdest, and best game studios active today: Telltale Games. Sam and Max, The Wolf Among Us, The Walking Dead, Homestar Runner, Bone, Monkey Island, and on and on. These properties and more have been remade and/or presented by Telltale into some of the best ever narrative games. From character writing to storytelling, adaptations to new series, Telltale’s pedigree is noticeable and not to be taken lightly. And many of their games stillRead More →

Please welcome our newest ambassador, Tahani Nelson! For The Geek Embassy, she’ll be writing about comics, anime, dungeons and dragons, and fantasy.  Please welcome her to the site and enjoy the glimpse into her future articles! ~Isabela Hi, there. My name’s Tahani Nelson and I’m incredibly excited to be part of things here at Geek Embassy. For what it’s worth, I’m more of a Jack-of-All-Trades-Master-of-None sort of Geek—I’ve dabbled in almost everything to some degree, though there’s no particular thing that I know about more than anyone else. I actually prefer it this way, because there’s always something more to learn. My favorite geeky pursuitsRead More →

Hype. It’s a word that is thrown around a lot today in general and seems to be used even more in the context of video game releases. Given the frequency with which this word is used it seems like maybe we should know its exact definition.  Let’s go to Google and see what it has to say. The definition of the noun seems relatively neutral. It’s when we look at the verb’s definition that we see an inkling of what might be a negative connotation. Finally, when we get into the examples of usage we see that hype really isn’t a good thing. Hello Games, theRead More →

Sims 4 gender update

Last year, I wrote about gender expression in the Sims and how amazing it would be if the game introduced the concept of a gender spectrum, rather than a gender binary…. A recent Sims 4 update revealed something that I never thought would actually come about. “For the first time, you’ll be able to customize your Sims without the gender boundaries previously set in place. This means you can now create Sims with any type of physique, walk style, and tone of voice you choose – regardless of their gender. We’ve also made clothing, hair, jewelry, and other visual options available to all Sims.” –Read More →

When I first started writing for Game On Girl back at the end of 2012, I immediately thought of doing an article at the beginning of every year where I looked ahead to the games that had me excited. I, to date, have done that exactly once, at the beginning of 2013. And looking at my choices then, I have to laugh. Only one of those games was released that year. One was released last summer, and the one I was most hyped for still doesn’t have an official release date yet. And now, almost three and half years later, I’m really not interested inRead More →

This week, our intern, Isabela, joins us to talk about a discussion she recently sparked on the Game on Girl Twitter feed and Facebook page. What are your favorite female friendships in TV, Movies, Books, and Video Games? We got such a great response from our community we decided to do an entire episode about it. We share our favorites and the feedback we got on Twitter and Facebook. Read the listener feedback on storify. In Gender Sells, we talk about a Carl’s Junior/Hardee’s ad and a Jello Pudding ad. One made us smile, and one made us furious. Wanna guess which? We’d love toRead More →

Through our exhaustion, we put together an episode detailing all the fun we had at cons on the same weekend but on opposite sides of the U.S. coast. Rhonda was at Dragon*Con in Atlanta, GA and I was at PAX Prime in Seattle, WA. Listen to hear all the great games we played, people we met, and stories we have to tell. We’d love to hear your con stories in the comments! What was your best story from a con this summer? Or your best ever? Also, we have a new YouTube Channel where we will be sharing some fantastic footage from PAX andRead More →

Two of our favorite things at Game on Girl cross paths today: tabletop and video games. Simon Berman from Privateer Press joins us to discuss the Kickstarter for WARMACHINE: Tactics. Tactics takes Privateer Press’s popular tabletop miniatures game and translates it to digital format. If that wasn’t awesome enough, the solo player campaign has a kick ass female lead, Lt. Allison Jakes! Joining us for this episode is Game on Girl writer and WARMACHINE veteran player, Mark Schjoll, who also shares what he’s WRaPing this week (Watching, Reading, and Playing). Let us know what you think of the show and go support the WARMACHINE: Tactics Kickstarter which wraps up inRead More →
