Mastering the Art of Staying Home!

These are some pretty scary times right now with the threat of the COVID-19 virus going around. Unfortunately, we are all at risk, and it affects us all. I know for me, I can get pretty overwhelmed with all the social media and news surrounding the virus. Sometimes, we need to turn our devices off, be in the moment, and remember to take care of ourselves and our loved ones.

I figured this article would come at the right time to help others along this journey we are all on. I cannot stress enough how important it is for people to self-quarantine and stay at home. Maybe it could be my anthropological background, or my need to share with others, but please, please, please… stay HOME! There is no need to go out and be around people at this time unless it’s absolutely necessary for your job or to get essential supplies.

Having said that, there are many people who are going to be bored and not know what to do at home for all this time. However, there are some positives. For all my geeky friends, this is the time to catch up on your gaming, and maybe some of your creative enterprises waiting for you at home. I don’t know about anybody else, but I have a ton of projects that I have been wanting to get done but have not had the time for. Let’s take a look at some of the good things we can do while we find ourselves stuck at home!

I can pretty much geek out on anything I put my mind to, and I’m sure you can too. There are so many shows and movies I’ve been wanting to catch up on; so many books to read, and so many crafts to start and finish.

I swear, my husband and I have had our PlayStation for a few years now, and I have yet to open up Call Of Duty and play! I’m such a nerd for shooting games (don’t know if that’s the greatest thing or not), and I still somehow have not played this game at home! It’s about time.

Playing with others online is always the best. What a great way to play with people from a very far social distance! I recently discovered PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds as well, and so I’ve been playing that with people on my phone too. There is also a mobile version of Call of Duty. (Shooting games not only help you gain hand-eye coordination, but they can also prepare you for the zombie apocalypse. Just saying…) At any rate, I know I can play these games for hours.

Just remember to get up once in a while and not sit ALL day.

I’m somewhat of a collector of books. It drives my husband crazy. Moving was a nightmare! When the games start to bore me, I love sitting in my sweats with a nice cup of tea and just reading while my dog lays on me. I recently bought those Barnes and Noble collection books that are AMAZING! I got the whole collection of Shakespeare’s pieces and also a book with the Star Wars novels. I can’t wait to sit down and actually crack those open.

Of course, I also love my young adult books too. They always give me ideas to help me finish my own novel. While we’re at it, what about writing your own SCI-FI novel or futuristic young adult novel. They say a decent length young-adult novel is about 60,000 words. Might as well get going on that. Start writing, because something will come to you and it’s a really great way to release your mind from all of the craziness going on right now.

I have been wanting to work on some of my backlog of shows and movies lately. I’ve decided that I am going to go back and have some marathons of some of my favorites. I’m going to watch Star Wars from the beginning. It’s so hard to get people into Star Wars who aren’t already fans, but it’s my mission in life to make my husband watch all of them with me (and actually like them! We’ll see…. wish me luck!) I also want to watch all the Harry Potter movies again, AND I might even watch all the Marvel movies again.

Sometimes, we get reminders that we need to take it easy and rest. We don’t always need to be on the go and be so busy all the time. This might be a great time to remember to pause and look around and enjoy the things that we do have in our lives and to be grateful. I know I’m trying to do that right now. I still have my job, but there are many people who are out of work and really stressed out. I feel for them.

We all know that we can download a ton of games on our phones, and those are great. Personally, I’ve been geeking out on card games lately… just saying. I’m going to be so prepared for those gambling nights with friends! I am determined to take all their money at these awesome card games!

What about getting some of your artistic abilities out? I know there are some paint by numbers out there that have your favorite superhero, or one of your favorite gaming characters. Now that I think about it, I did see a pretty great Naruto one!

One of the last things on my list of stuff to do while at home is to finally put up my bird feeders and start my garden. It’s the perfect time. I haven’t seen Birds of Prey yet, but I am looking forward to doing that as well. (Maybe it will give me some bird inspiration! HA!) Maybe it’s because I’m getting older or just discovering new things that I like, but the more I see birds around my yard, the more I want to know about them.

I know maybe this article wasn’t as “geeky” as some of the other ones I’ve written, but it’s important to remember to always take care of yourself and loved ones. Make sure that if you have to go out in public, that you are standing at least six feet away from others. And be the superhero you are. If you know that one of your loved ones has underlying health conditions or your grandparents are older, go get them their groceries and leave them outside their front door for them.

Remember to always be kind and help each other out. I can see Spider-Man now, helping an elderly woman across the streets with her groceries! It makes me smile.
