Hey, Geeks. Welcome to Your Favorite Thing Sucks, where I get to talk about all the worst parts of your favorite things. It’s Halloween, and I bet at least 70% of you reading this have already watched Hocus Pocus at least once this season, and that it’s one of those things you do every year. While everyone else in the world keeps saying,”Yeah. It’s a thing,” I’m sitting here wondering why more people aren’t saying, “Yeah. It’s a problem.” Let’s chat. You’re Really Only in it for the Nostalgia Every millenial I know watches Hocus Pocus at least once during Halloween season — and they have been doing so forRead More →

Greetings my freaks and geeks, my nefarious nerdlings! It’s that time of year again: spooks and specters and unnecessarily sexy work uniforms will soon be around every corner. So, why not celebrate that a little bit? If you weren’t here last year, we released a special Halloween reading of Lovecraft’s “The Outsider”, and it was so fun the first time, why not go again? This year, as selected by your ambassadors, The Geek Embassy is proud to present Edgar Allan Poe’s classic: “The Tell-Tale Heart.” I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that Edgar Allan Poe was my first exposure to classical horror. Writers like Lovecraft, Crichton,Read More →

Earlier this year, I started taking sewing lessons. The first day of class, our instructor asked us to give a brief introduction and describe why we decided to learn how to sew. The answers were varied. Some where there to learn how to make clothes for themselves. Many expressed a desire to make clothes that properly fit them well when off the rack clothes so quickly and easily failed to. One woman quilted but didn’t know how to assemble a garment or follow a pattern. One was a high school teacher who wanted the skills to make her more marketable. Apparently, it’s really hard toRead More →

Halloween

Greetings, ladies, gentlemen, and others. A bit of a departure this week from my usual ramblings, in celebration of my favorite holiday: All Hallow’s Eve. Instead of a written piece, The Geek Embassy has granted me the opportunity to present a dramatic reading of a piece penned by one of the great masters of modern ethereal horror: H. P. Lovecraft, and his short story, The Outsider. I will be the first to express bias towards this tale, as it imitates the voice of another famed horror writer, Edgar Allan Poe, a personal favorite of mine. And it is true, Lovecraft is the mind behind Cthulhu, one of theRead More →

spooky picture for Halloween podcast

If you’re having trouble getting into the Halloween spirit, put on one of these podcasts to set a spooky mood! Welcome to Night Vale Welcome to Night Vale is a twice-monthly podcast, narrated by Cecil Palmer (voiced by Cecil Baldwin), the community radio host for the mysterious desert town Night Vale.  Cecil has been a lifelong resident of Night Vale and has been a radio host for… an indeterminate amount of time.  Time is a hazy concept in the town, the dog park is off-limits to the residents, and station management is amorphous, to say the least. The tone can change quickly from comedic toRead More →

Missed the beginning? Read part one. It was about a month after first finding the rabbit that things seemed to start escalating. I was in the backyard with the dogs for their 9:30am outing in late July. The morning was unusually cool for that time of year. I was looking at my tomato plants and wondering if they were going to bear much fruit. The summer had been cooler than normal and my plants had not grown very much compared to previous years. I was torn from my thoughts by the sound of Baby Bear, one of the Schipperke mixes, growling at Baron in aRead More →

october

We embraced the season for October’s hangout and talked about our favorite horror and suspense films. The basics are covered like our favorites but we also talk about our history with suspense and horror films, branch off into TV shows, and briefly mention zombies and that show that premieres in a few weeks. Here are the questions we considered: What was your first horror/suspense movie? What movie scares you? What novel scared you? What suspense/horror movie made you laugh? What is your all time favorite suspense/horror movie? Are there horror/suspense movies that belong canon? We do a horror-themed geek and tell but I just couldn’t helpRead More →
