Game of Thrones Reunions We Can’t Wait For: Arya and Melisandre

Many of the exciting reunions we can expect in the final season of Game of Thrones are from characters who have a lot of history between them. But there are two characters who interacted for less than a minute, and their reunion has the potential to be one of the most interesting. Those two characters are Arya and Melisandre.

The Meeting

Arya and Melisandre meet when the latter comes to take Gendry away to use his blood to help Stannis. By that time Arya has significant feelings for Gendry, even though they may be completely plutonic. Once she learns Melisandre plans to take him away, Arya confronts her in typical angry Arya fashion.

But that’s not what makes this interaction interesting. It’s Melisandre’s comments that add the intrigue.

“I see a darkness in you. And in that darkness, eyes staring back at me… eyes you’ll shut forever.”

This interaction takes place in season 3, well before Arya travels to Braavos. So Melisandre’s words almost certainly predict Arya becoming one of the Faceless Men. The last thing Melisandre says to Arya is that they’ll meet again. And while Melisandre’s predictions haven’t always been spot-on, there’s no reason to believe this one won’t come true.

Arya’s List

Arya’s list of people she plans to kill is central to her character. In its most recent variation, the only two names that remain are Cersei and The Mountain, as she disposed of Meryn Trant in season 5 and Walder Frey in season 6. The most obvious name to fall off her list is The Hound, but he’s not the only one who disappeared. In season 4, while Arya is The Hound’s hostage, her list includes “The Red Woman” and others from The Brotherhood Without Banners, but they haven’t been on her list since that time in season 4. But the fact that Melisandre was there at one time is not an accident.

The Reunion

If we believe what Melisandre said to Arya, then this is a reunion that will definitely happen, though it’s not likely to be a happy one. In fact, Arya may be the person who kills Melisandre. (Melisandre said in season 7 that she will die in Westeros.) Arya’s feelings may change depending on whether she meets Melisandre before of after she meets back up with Gendry, but it’s not likely to make that much of a difference as Gendry will not have very nice feelings toward Melisandre either.
