If I Were a Rock Star Part II: Songs We Would Make Legendary on NBC’s The Voice

A Gigawatt Jukebox  playlist

From Rockabilly to Reggae, Movie Scores to Soul, our Gigawatt Jukebox is out of control.  In true geek style, we submit a never-ending playlist that is not concerned with genre, popularity, or album release date.

Who hasn’t dreamt of being a rock star…the power of your music surging energy into a roaring crowd?  With popular singing competition TV shows like The Voice, living the dream can actually happen.   After years of watching others sing their way into stardom, it got us thinking.  What would we do in their shoes?  What kind of voice would we belt if we could?  Which songs would we like to be famous for singing?  For the first time, members of the Geek Embassy galaxy come together to share a 4-part ensemble playlist.  Week two belongs to Dante Buccieri.

Dante

I’ve always been a baritone, but I wish I was a tenor.  I’m kind of a showboat, and as much as I love a bass voice, the majority of popular music is written for tenors.  I would love to karaoke the hell out of these songs, if only I was a tenor and/or had a reliable falsetto.

I WANT YOU BACK – THE JACKSON 5

I Want You Back by the Jackson 5 is one of my all-time favorite feel-good songs.  I realize the irony is that the song describes a man begging his ex to give him one more try, but the song is so damn catchy and really has no business being as peppy as it is.  It was great before 2014, and now that Guardians of the Galaxy exists it is impossible for me to hear this song without smiling.

DON’T STOP ME NOW – QUEEN

Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen is one of my energy pumpers.  If I need to get really amped up for something or I just did something really awesome, I play Don’t Stop Me Now.  There was also a time where I considered changing my roller derby alias to Mr. Fahrenheit.  True story.

SHUT UP AND DANCE – WALK THE MOON

Shut Up and Dance by Walk the Moon is a recent favorite.  It’s another feel-good, energy pumping song.  This one never fails to make me want to dance, which I guess is the whole point of the song.  I fell in love with the song after watching the music video and realizing that the protagonist of the video is basically my spirit animal.

BILLIE JEAN – MICHAEL JACKSON

Yes, Michael Jackson appears 3 times on this list!  I love Michael Jackson.  Say what you want about the man’s personal life.  MJ is without a doubt in my mind the greatest musical entertainer to ever live.  My mother grew up on Motown and she’d play MJ when I was young.  I love his music and would love to be able to perform arguably his two greatest hits.

BEAT IT – MICHAEL JACKSON

THE LONGEST TIME – BILLY JOEL

The Longest Time, Tell Her About It, and Uptown Girl by Billy Joel are hallmarks of one of my favorite artists from high school who continues to be a favorite of mine.  I am originally from southwest Connecticut, a stone’s throw from the NY state border and about 90 miles from NYC.  Now that I live in Portland, OR, Billy Joel (a Long Island native) is that little slice of the Northeast that I get to carry with me wherever I go, not to mention the hours upon hours of childhood nostalgia I have from playing his records over and over again.  I love singing along with him; happy or sad, fast or slow, Billy Joel is a go-to artist for me.  I will never be able to match his vocal range, but I would love to be able to do his songs justice.

TELL HER ABOUT IT – BILLY JOEL

UPTOWN GIRL – BILLY JOEL

Tune in next Monday for Part 3 of this Series!
