Loving the podcast. I think you guys were a little hard on Big Bang Theory, though, for making fun of girl gamers. They make fun of all the characters! They make fun of the guys for gaming, too. And for collecting comic books. And for being scientists. And all of the characters for their own idiosyncrasies. Bernadette may not have been the ideal image of a girl gamer, but it’s a stereotype, just like every other stereotype they make fun of in the show. I thought it was hilarious. Besides, she had to do something that wouldn’t fit in so the guys could finally have their weekend. I thought it was classy of her to leave with grace once she realized she was imposing.
Thanks for commenting, Beth! I truly appreciate it and I’m so glad you’re listening.
I think you’re right – I ended up editing quite a bit from this episode and one of the things that I cut was how much I enjoy that they poke fun at ALL the stereotypes for the men and the women on the show. I think I just tend to be hyper sensitive to the portrayal of women gamers… can’t imagine why! I also agree that Bernadette did leave with grace and composure when she figured out what the gaming weekend really meant to the guys.
I still think that they are complicating her character in a way I can’t really support. The tie between her and Howard’s mom I feel is going in a weird direction and it almost seems like they are doing it for a cheap laugh here and there. I thought she would wip him into shape and help him individualize away from being Mommy’s Little Boy but she is only replacing the dynamic between Howard and his mom. That lessens her character for me. What do you think?
