Default Line In case you didn’t hear, the Doctor gets a new face this December.  The BBC introduced English actress Jodie Whittaker as the next Doctor and almost immediately came under fire. I have so many problems with all of this that even Jay-Z feels bad for me.  This isn’t about Jodie Whittaker or Doctor Who.  This isn’t even about science fiction.  It is about the implications of people complaining about non-straight, non-white, non-male actors/characters cast in lead roles.  Specifically, folks moaning about those lead roles that traditionally featured straight, white men.  And frankly, it needs to stop. The Base Settings Phenomenon It all stems fromRead More →

The Handmaid’s Tale For the next episode in our TGE Watches series, Isabela and I discuss the Hulu Original series: The Handmaid’s Tale. We discussed the series several times as it was airing, and had differing thoughts and opinions about it. These differences make for a pretty lively and engaging discussion. Series Description Adapted from the classic novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism in its militarized ‘return to traditional values’. AsRead More →

This is your Buffy the Vampire Spoiler Warning.  Consider yourself warned.  But seriously, it’s a 20-year old show; you already know what happens. We here at The Geek Embassy love Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  The seminal late-90’s horror/drama show was my introduction to dynamic and independent female characters.  BTVS shaped my appreciation for the greater “sci-fi/fantasy” umbrella genre; for me, it is a timeless vehicle by which to explore complex motifs and themes.  It is an important show for me personally, and for the greater all-encompassing “sci-fi” umbrella.  Twenty years later, and I still get chills when I hear the words “Bored now.” Why Now? IRead More →

Parental Figures Have All the Fun You love them… most of the time. Some are good, some are bad, some are so good we tear up talking about them. For this hangout, we share our favorite parental figures from TV shows, movies, and books. We combined May and June’s hangout into one epic conversation. I had the idea to talk about favorite moms for May’s hangout since we were scheduled to record around Mother’s Day. When we had to reschedule, it made sense to make it a May and June parental figures celebration. Each of us came with a different set of priorities and considerationsRead More →

girls

I wasn’t a fan of the HBO series, Girls, at the start of the show. To say I was slow to appreciate it is an understatement. My initial hesitation rooted in the lead character, Hannah’s, self-centered approach to life. She acted as if the world, and New York City in particular, owed her something. I couldn’t stand her or her attitude. I can’t quite say what it was that kept me watching the show. My usual excuse falls to being a story addict and having to know how the story ends. But I’ve given up on stories that didn’t annoy me to the lengths that GirlsRead More →
