From Episode 91: Rhonda’s 2014 Film Watch List

I mentioned a lot of films for 2014 that have at least raised my curiosity. Most don’t have trailers out yet. When they do I’ll be able to make a better judgement or give the film the axe. But for now, these are the ones I’m watching.

WATCH LIST

I, Frankenstein
Mostly because it stars Aaron Eckhart but I’m not expecting much. It’s Frankenstein as an action hero.

Robocop
This is for sentimental reasons and Michael Keaton and Gary Oldman.

Captain American: The Winter Soldier
The original may actually be my favorite film in the Avenger series.

The Boxtrolls
I love stop animation. This is by the same people who made “Coraline” and “ParaNorman“. Watch the trailer. Now!

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1
One of the rare films that I thought was better than the book. (The other is “The 13th Warrior“.)

The Hobbit: There and Back Again
Yes, there’s stuff after Smaug.

DIRECTOR’S PICK

The Grand Budapest Hotel
This is a Wes Anderson film. I loved “The Darjeeling Limited” and “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou“.

The adventures of Gustave H, a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend.

Jupiter Ascending
A new Andy and Lana Wachowski movie I know very little about. Just like with M. Night Shyamalan, despite the dreadful “Speed Racer” and The Matrix 2 & 3, I will go see their movie.

“In a universe where humans are near the bottom of the evolutionary ladder, a young destitute human woman is targeted for assassination by the Queen of the Universe because her very existence threatens to end the Queen’s reign.”

BIG SCREEN MATERIAL

Noah
The trailer looks great and wouldn’t it be wonderful to have another epic film like Cecil B. DeMille’s “The Ten Commandments“?

FOR FUN

The Lego Movie
Stories told with Lego people = Fun. Look it up.

IN THE QUEUE

Winter’s Tale
I thought this might be a romance I could get behind but looks like the female role is a trope. At least it has Colin Ferrell.

A burglar falls for an heiress as she dies in his arms. When he learns that he has the gift of reincarnation, he sets out to save her.

Muppets Most Wanted
I yearn for the good old days of “The Muppet Show”. The movie will have to do.

GUILTY PLEASURE

300: Rise of an Empire
I saw “300” four times. I took all my friends. They all hated it. Fine. More for me.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For
I loved the first film. I own it. Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez make a good team. Yes, the film is horribly sexist. Thus the guilt. Lots of guilt.

SECOND TIME’S A CHARM

How to Train Your Dragon 2
I love the art work and the characters. It should be great to watch.

CAN YOU BELIEVE…

Transformers: Age of Extinction
Maybe they hope to redeem themselves by replacing LeBeouf with Wahlberg and Tucci.

The Expendables 3
I’m a fan of almost all of these action heroes and still watch their movies. But stop. Go make other films.

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones” and “Paranormal Activity 5
Two released in the same year. Really? Okay.

DID YOU KNOW…

Godzilla
I didn’t even know they were making another one. Besides an Olsen twin, the cast includes Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad”) and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (“Kick Ass”).

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Will there be women in loin cloths? Will they be able to speak? Alan Serkis (Golem) and Gary Oldman.

The Giver
What do Taylor Swift, Katie Holmes, and Meryl Streep have in common. “The Giver”!

In a seemingly perfect community, without war, pain, suffering, differences or choice, a young boy is chosen to learn from an elderly man about the true pain and pleasure of the “real” world.

TBD

Selfless
Director Tarsem Singh did “The Fall” which is wonderful. Ryan Reynolds needs a sleeper hit to rise from the ashes.

An extremely wealthy elderly man, dying from cancer, undergoes a radical medical procedure that transfers his consciousness to the body of a healthy young man, but all is not as it seems when he starts to uncover the mystery of the body’s origin and the secret organization that will kill to protect its cause.

Rhonda has a BS in Mathematics and Computer Science and is a self-taught graphic designer. She considers herself a geek*wildcard because she has a little bit of experience in everything.
